Blockchain and Business Models — A Procedural Model.
Since its initial introduction, blockchain has been considered a transformative technology with far-reaching implications for existing business models. Particular attention is paid to companies acting as intermediaries — that is, as mediating parties whose role is fundamentally challenged by decentralised technologies.
This doctoral dissertation (TU Clausthal, 2021) develops a four-phase procedural model that provides companies with a structured approach to analyse the effects of a blockchain implementation on their existing business model. The model draws on a combination and extension of established economic and management frameworks.
The sub-steps and instruments of each phase are developed in depth and validated in an integrated illustrative multi-case study across four exemplary intermediary companies. The dissertation forms the conceptual foundation for the subsequent development of the Business Model Stress Testing methodology.
